India is witnessing a historic infrastructure build-out at scale.We aren't just talking about incremental growth; we are looking at a structural shift where data center capacity leaps from roughly 1.3 GW to a projected 9 GW by 2030.

India's economic narrative has traditionally been written in bandwidth and connectivity. As we approach 2030, the lexicon is shifting. The physics of the grid are changing before our eyes. Traditional 5–10 kW server racks are being replaced by AI-native clusters demanding around 120 kW per rack (up to ~132 kW at full load), fundamentally altering thermal and electrical load profiles. This densification drives a stark reality: India's data center electricity consumption is forecast to surge from roughly 13 TWh in 2024 to 57 TWh by 2030. That is a near five-fold increase in consumption in just six years, threatening to consume roughly 2.6–3% of the nation's total power generation.

This demand arrives just as the grid faces its own last mile crisis. While renewable capacity expands, transmission bottlenecks have left over 50 GW of renewable energy stranded, and aggregate technical & commercial (AT&C) losses, while improving, stood at ~15% in FY25 (Ministry of Power, January 2026). With AI-related workloads projected to account for 20% of India's incremental power demand by 2030, the risk is no longer just about cost it's about availability.

Without a unified strategy merging transmission planning with digital infrastructure, we risk stalling the very digital economy we aim to build.

The gap is brutal. Grid transmission bottlenecks, patchy renewable firming, water stress and the sheer speed of hyperscale build-outs mean most new campuses are still warm shell until power is sorted. The February 2026 budget proposed a tax holiday till 2047 for eligible foreign companies providing cloud services globally using India-based data centers just poured petrol on the fire, an era of "gold rush"
